Why did you choose this profession? Did you just really enjoy reading books, so you wanted to recreate that? That was the moment that I realized, “Wait, this is going to be something I’m going to have to do and re-do.” I think the moment when you realize that you can do a ton of work, and it can still be no good, I think that’s when you realize that it will be a process, instead of just a flash of insight. I finished, looked at it and I thought, “It’s not good enough, I’ve got a long way to go from here, I’m going to have to study this, try hard.” I kind of thought it was going to be natural for me because I was such a huge reader. I wrote this book, and it was the first time I had ever come close to finishing a novel. I wanted to actually become an author and get started on the rest of my life that was the way I saw it.

I was really serious about it, and I really wanted it to get published. It took me until I was in college, and I was trying really hard to write a novel for the first time.
